Evaluating Lead Quality: Look Beyond Contact Rate

Contact Rate Is Not Enough
When lead buyers evaluate a new vendor, contact rate is usually the first metric they look at. It makes sense — if you cannot reach the prospect, nothing else matters. But a high contact rate alone does not mean you are buying good leads. A vendor can deliver leads with valid phone numbers that answer the phone but have no real intent, do not meet your qualification criteria, or are not ready to make a decision.
The Metrics That Matter
Beyond contact rate, the metrics that predict actual ROI include: qualification rate (what percentage of contacted leads meet your criteria for enrollment, funding, or consultation), conversion rate (what percentage become paying clients or funded deals), cost per acquisition (total lead spend divided by closed deals), and return rate (what percentage of leads need to be returned for quality issues). Track all of these by vendor, by campaign, and over time.
Asking the Right Questions
When evaluating a lead provider, ask how they source their leads (search, social, display, affiliate), what qualification steps the prospect completes before delivery, how they handle fraud detection, whether they offer exclusivity, and what their return policy covers. A vendor who is transparent about their process and willing to share campaign-level data is usually a safer bet than one who only talks about volume and price.
The Cost of Cheap Leads
Low per-lead pricing is appealing, but the math often does not work out. If a $20 lead converts at 2% and a $45 lead converts at 6%, the $45 lead costs less per acquisition. Always evaluate cost per lead in the context of downstream conversion — not in isolation.
Building a Testing Framework
Start new vendors with a small, defined test — 50 to 100 leads over two to four weeks. Track every metric from contact rate through close. Compare against your existing sources on a cost-per-acquisition basis. Scale the sources that perform and cut the ones that do not. This disciplined approach protects your budget and builds a reliable pipeline over time.
